Thesser DeRoche - Geologist
Miss. Thesser DeRoche, Dominica's first geologist, was trained in Cuba and has been a very active member of the group. She is very instrumental in organizing community activities and sampling and monitoring of thermal hotspots and fumaroles. Her expertise is well valued by the group and the community will be well served by her knowledge which she is more than willing to use for the good of all.

Wayne Abraham - Founder

Wayne AbrahamIn 1998 hundreds of earthquakes shook the capital city Roseau and surrounding villages. Information on these earthquakes were not readily available. Amateur Radio Operators became active and Wayne, a Ham Radio Operator living in the north of the island, tried assisting by searching the web for information on these quakes. Instead he found information on the Public Seismic Network at http://psn.quake.net.

Wayne proceeded to make contact with members of this group and before long, Ed Cranswick - then seismologist at the USGS and his friend Jody Bourgeois - tsunami expert at the University of Washington, came to Dominica on vacation. They brought the necessary equipment to setup a seismic station and spent most of their vacation time educating ham radio operators on the basics of seismology.

Ever since Wayne has continued monitoring earthquakes. He has setup and continues to operate all the PSN's seismic stations. He is also webmaster of this website and is the driving force behind all PSN activities.

Taihisa Hill - Geologist

Taihisa HillGraduated at Southern Connecticut State University.  Majored in Earth Science Concentration in Geology, Taihisa hopes to complete a PhD. in volcanology in the near future and work exclusively in Dominica.  Currently she is doing research work on the Boiling Lake and Freshwater Lake.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

The PSN assisted in the identification of and laying of temperature data loggers in fumaroles located in 80 feet deep water in Prince Rupert's Bay. We provided the boat and diver and gathered information from local fishermen and divers to facilitate this venture. The data loggers recorded for 10 days revealing temperatures in excess of 125º C.

We have recently embarked on a public awareness campaign which includes recruiting new members from a cross-section of the community. Special focus is being placed on retirees searching for a hobby and young people with a liking for the outdoors. We are also focusing our efforts in the northern town of Portsmouth which, quite recently, has shown signs of increased seismicity.
